Service Frame Delivery

  • Broadcast
    • Deliver to all UNIs in the EVC but the ingress UNI
  • Multicast
    • Delivered to all UNIs in the EVC but the ingress UNI
  • Unicast (unknown and known destination address)
    • Delivered to all UNIs in the EVC but the ingress UNI if unknown destination address
    • Delivered to the UNI with known destination MAC address
  • Layer 2 Control (e.g., BPDU)
    • Discard, peer, or tunnel

Source: Ethernet Services Attributes Phase 3

Layer 2 Control Protocol - L2CP (e.g. BPDU)

  • Discard
    • The MEN will discard ingress L2CP frames
  • Peer
    • The MEN will actively participate with the protocol
  • Tunnel
    • Service Frames containing the protocol will be transported across the MEN to the destination UNI(s) without change

CE VLAN ID Preservation 1

  • Ethernet Virtual Private Lines to a Hub Location
    • In this example, CE-VLAN Preservation = No for all EVCs (See EVC service attribute table 16 of MEF 6.1)
    • Service Provider has three EVCs, each from a branch location to a hub location.
    • UNI 1 is the hub location and the other UNIs are the branch locations.
    • The CE-VLAN ID/EVC Maps as agreed to by the Subscriber and the Service Provider for each UNI are included in the figure.

MEF: Overview-of-MEF-6.1_and_10.3.pptx

CE VLAN ID Preservation 2

  • Ethernet Private LAN
    • In this example, CE-VLAN Preservation = Yes (See EVC service attribute table 20 of MEF 6.1.1)
    • the Service Provider provides a single Ethernet Private LAN associating four UNIs.

Quality of Service - Performance Metrics

  • The performance for an EVC is specified using one or more Performance Metrics. A Performance Metric is a quantitative characterization of Service Frame delivery quality.
  • Performance Metrics:
    • One-way Frame Delay Performance
    • One-way Frame Delay Range Performance
    • One-way Mean Frame Delay Performance
    • One-way Inter-Frame Delay Variation Performance
    • One-way Frame Loss Ratio Performance
    • One-way Availability Performance
    • One-way Resiliency Performance expressed as High Loss Intervals
    • One-way Resiliency Performance expressed as Consecutive High Loss Intervals
    • One-way Group Availability Performance (Section 8.8.6)

Quality of Service - Bandwidth Profiles

  • Based on same parameters and algorithm as in MEF 10.2
    • Committed Information Rate (CIR) in bits/sec
    • Committed Burst Size (CBS) in bytes
    • Excess Information Rate (EIR) in bits/sec
    • Excess Burst Size (EBS) in bytes
    • Coupling Flag
    • Color Mode – always set to Color-Aware
  • Ingress Bandwidth Profile (policing)
    • Applied per OVC End Point or per OVC End Point and Class of Service
      • Green <-> SLS applies
      • Yellow <-> no SLS
      • Red <-> discard
    • Egress Bandwidth Profile (shaping)
      • Applied per OVC End Point or per OVC End Point and Class of Service

Source: Ethernet Services Attributes Phase 3

Bandwidth Profiles

  • Sometimes called "Hierarchical Quality of Service" aka H-QoS
  • Performance Tiers

    • PT0.3 - City PT
      • derived from distances less than Metro in extent (<75 km, 0.6 ms)
    • PT1 - Metro PT
      • derived from typical Metro distances (<250 km, 2 ms)
    • PT2 - Regional PT
      • derived from typical Regional distances (<1200 km, 8 ms)
    • PT3 - Continental PT
      • derived from typical National/Continental distances (<7000 km, 44 ms)
    • PT4 - Global PT
      • derived from typical Global/Intercontinental distances (<27500 km, 172 ms)
